Direction Gritadero (Direction Critorium) is a comedy by French-Senegalese author Guy Foissy (1932-2021) that explores themes such as social alienation, state control and the impossibility of self-expression. In a retro-futuristic society not very different from our own, three women wait at a stop for the bus that will take them to the “gritadero”, or shouting grounds, a place where, at precise times and separated by gender, citizens go to vent, to scream, to let out the pressures and frustrations of the day. With sharp and at times painful humor, Foissy exposes an accurate critique of the ways in which as a society we have become accustomed to only obeying rules while losing our ability to express ourselves and, with it, our freedom to exist.
